Can I brush my hair?
I’m often asked if it’s okay to brush your hair. For years, many of us have been told to never run a brush through our hair and to only use our fingers. But after working with hair more closely, I can confidently say—the answer is yes. Brushing your hair can actually be great for both scalp and overall hair health.
Brushing helps stimulate the scalp, increase circulation, and distribute natural oils from the scalp down through the hair shaft. This can support healthier, more nourished hair over time. It can also feel incredibly relaxing, almost like a mini scalp massage.
That said, timing matters. You don’t want to brush your hair right before going out, especially if you’re wearing your hair curly or styled. Brushing can disrupt the curl pattern and create frizz, which may not be the look you’re going for.
A great time to brush is at night. Brushing your scalp and hair before bed allows those natural oils to move through the hair while you sleep. Then, in the morning, you can re-wet and reshape your curls as needed.
So yes—brush your hair and your scalp. Let the bristles gently massage and stimulate. Your scalp and hair will thank you. Just be mindful not to do it right before styling or heading out if you want to maintain definition and minimize frizz.
